Weak US Demand Casts Shadow on Bitcoin's July Gains
Bitcoin's recent upturn in July may be short-lived due to persistent weakness in US demand, according to financial analysts. While the cryptocurrency enjoyed a six-day winning streak, its longest since March, several key indicators suggest a fragile recovery. A significant concern is the "Coinbase Premium," which tracks the price difference between Bitcoin on US-based exchange Coinbase and Binance, an exchange that does not operate in the US. This premium has been negative for an unprecedented fifty consecutive days. This extended period indicates that Bitcoin is consistently cheaper on Coinbase, signalling subdued demand within the world's largest economy. Further reinforcing this trend are the eight straight weeks of net outflows from US spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Historically, robust Bitcoin bull runs have been characterised by consistently positive Coinbase Premiums, making the current negative trend a notable red flag for investors. The broader global economic landscape also presents potential headwinds. Bond yields in Japan have reached a 30-year high, pushing up borrowing costs across major economies including the US, UK, and Germany. A continued rise in Treasury yields, in particular, could dampen enthusiasm for risk assets like Bitcoin, potentially hindering its recovery. Despite some seasonal indicators suggesting a continued recovery, analysts highlight that ETF flows remain the most crucial factor. "Until [BlackRock's ETF] IBIT itself flips back to sustained inflows, the structural institutional bid remains unproven," cautioned analysts at crypto exchange Bitfinex in a report shared with CoinDesk. This underscores the need for renewed institutional investment to solidify any gains. Singapore-based crypto trading firm QCP Capital, however, offered a more optimistic near-term outlook, stating that the backdrop appears "constructive," especially if spot Bitcoin ETFs can maintain inflows following a recent welcome shift from persistent outflows. They further suggested that a decisive reclaim of the $64,000 price level this week would significantly boost market sentiment and alleviate concerns surrounding publicly traded Bitcoin-holder Strategy (MSTR). Investors are advised to closely monitor these key indicators, particularly US demand and ETF flow trends, to gauge the sustainability of Bitcoin's recent price movements. The interplay of macroeconomic factors and institutional investment will be critical in determining the cryptocurrency's trajectory in the coming weeks.
