Dogecoin and Hyperliquid's HYPE token led weekly crypto losses as investors shifted to booming AI stocks, despite Bitcoin's resilience amid market pressures.

The cryptocurrency market experienced a challenging week as investor focus shifted towards the booming artificial intelligence (AI) sector, drawing capital away from digital assets. Dogecoin and Hyperliquid's HYPE token led the decline, each shedding approximately 10% of their value.
While major cryptocurrencies struggled, Bitcoin demonstrated relative resilience, only slipping about 5%. The leading digital asset repeatedly rebounded from dips nearing $58,000, a pattern that analysts attribute to margin liquidations followed by aggressive dip-buying by investors keen to capitalise on lower prices despite wider market pressures.
The broader crypto market remains under considerable strain from several factors. Continuous outflows from US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are a significant concern. Furthermore, a hawkish stance from the US Federal Reserve and a strong US dollar continue to exert downward pressure on digital asset valuations. This comes despite a persistent risk-on sentiment in traditional markets, where broad equity indexes have reached new record highs, particularly those benefiting from the AI surge.
Dogecoin saw a 9.6% drop over the seven-day period, settling at around $0.076. Hyperliquid's HYPE token experienced an even steeper decline of 9.9%, marking the most significant losses among major cryptocurrencies. Ethereum (Ether) also fell, down 8.4% to approximately $1,581, while XRP decreased by 7.8% to $1.06. In contrast, Solana and Tron fared better, remaining largely flat at $72 and $0.32 respectively by the end of the week.
Bitcoin, often considered a bellwether for the crypto market, proved to be the most stable of the major assets. It registered a 5.3% decline, trading around $60,345 on Saturday after briefly touching an intraday low of about $58,800 on Friday before recovering. CoinDesk data highlights Bitcoin's ability to quickly recover from significant price drops, indicating underlying support.
Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst at FxPro, observed that Bitcoin's approach to $58,000 on Thursday and Friday was followed by rapid price recovery. He noted, "This pattern resembles margin position liquidations during downtrend spikes, followed by strong buying on pending orders during the recovery." Kuptsikevich also cautioned about sustained pressure, suggesting that institutional investors' ability to quickly divest from cryptocurrencies to stabilise their balance sheets could lead to continued volatility and periodic sell-off spikes by leveraged traders.
The divergence between the crypto market and traditional equities continues to be a key theme. Wall Street witnessed a strategic rotation of investments, moving away from the chipmakers that have spearheaded market gains and into a more diverse range of companies poised for steady growth. The S&P 500 concluded the week with minor changes, yet the majority of its constituent companies saw gains, and the equal-weighted version of the index achieved a new record high. This equal-weighted index offers a more accurate representation of market health by mitigating the dominance of the largest corporations.
Contributing to the positive sentiment in traditional markets was a fall in oil prices, while semiconductor shares experienced another downturn after an impressive run, despite still being on track for their best quarter to date. The fluctuations in chip stocks signal a broader market shift. The initial widespread optimism surrounding AI is now tempered by concerns about the elevated valuations these stocks have reached. While few believe the AI trade is definitively over, the perception that these stocks will only ever rise is beginning to fade, leading investors to seek opportunities in other sectors.
