Bitcoin traders are increasingly hedging against potential price drops, with a significant block trade placed on a £40,000 ($50,000) Bitcoin put Option for the September expiry. This move suggests some market participants anticipate a further 15% decline in the cryptocurrency's value by the end of the third quarter.
This comes as Bitcoin recently dipped to £46,160 ($57,700), its lowest point since September 2024, before experiencing a slight recovery to £47,000 ($58,800). The sharp downturn triggered £316 million ($395 million) in liquidations within 24 hours, predominantly impacting bullish positions.
Despite an increase in open interest (OI) for Bitcoin futures, climbing from 740,000 BTC to 768,000 BTC, the sentiment remains cautious. Puts are currently trading at a premium to calls across all timeframes on Deribit, indicating a prevailing bearish outlook among options traders.
The broader market for risk assets, including cryptocurrencies and technology stocks, has faced headwinds in recent weeks. Concerns over rising inflation have strengthened the US dollar, leading to a more cautious investment environment. Smaller altcoins have been particularly vulnerable, lacking the liquidity to withstand rapid price declines and liquidation cascades.
Interestingly, crude futures listed on crypto exchanges saw £12 million ($15 million) in liquidations, ranking as the fifth-largest tally across all tokens. This highlights the growing integration of traditional finance (TradFi) trading activities onto cryptocurrency platforms.
While annualised funding rates for Bitcoin futures hover near 5%, hinting at some bullish bias, the negative 24-hour cumulative volume delta suggests that bearish traders are actively employing market orders, indicating aggressive selling pressure.
In tandem with the cautious crypto outlook, gold futures have also shown signs of weakness. The open interest for gold perpetual futures has reached a record high of 222,000 XAU tokens. Concurrently, the metal's spot price is exhibiting a 'death cross' pattern, where the 50-day simple moving average falls below the 200-day simple moving average, typically signalling a bearish trend.
Jupiter (JUP) stands out as an exception, with its price surging 11.5% on the back of a 55% increase in trading volume and a significant jump in Total Value Locked (TVL) from 13.9 million to over 20 million SOL. Stellar (XLM) also extended its weekly rally to 16%, contributing to CoinMarketCap's altcoin season index remaining at 48/100.
However, the overall market sentiment remains one of caution. With Bitcoin options traders actively positioning for further downside and gold futures flashing a bearish signal, investors are bracing for potential instability rather than an immediate recovery in the coming months.
